Multi-tasking: a skill or a curse?

Today’s post is a personal observation, rather than a spark of business insight for you….

A couple of days ago I found myself with two laptops open, both booted up and whirring away.

I was clicking a web link on one laptop, then too impatient to wait for the webpage to open (about 3 seconds) I leaned over and opened up the next webpage I wanted on my other laptop. While that was opening up I started to compose and email to my accountant on one screen, then needed to upload a file to the email. This took 0.5 seconds, but that was too long. I turned my attention back to my autoresponder to create a new message to go out to a particular mailing list. Uploading an image into this was interminable – a whole 3 to 4 seconds.

So I opened up another browser window on both computers and started creating a blog post and a squeeze page on the two computers, darting backwards and forwards between all four tasks. Standing up, because of course you can work more quickly that way can’t you?

Then I had one of those moments where you spiral up above yourself and look at what a crazy fool you’re being and told myself quite firmly to stop. Focus. One thing at a time.

But you know sometimes the books can tell you the ‘right’ way to do things, and I know working on one thing at a time is supposed to be more effective but do you know what? I love the flurry of multi-tasking, of working so quickly, of crossing everything off my to-do list before 10am. As I’m writing this I’m skyping my VA, uploading the image to this blog post on another window and thinking of the name of my next product.

Am I mental? Are you one of my gang? Your thoughts below…..
